Stereo Pin Outs for the '97 E36

The sterero pin out is shown in the following diagrams. This is based on information from Dale Beunig's Unofficial BMW Home Page, at http://www.eskimo.com/~dalus/bmw/e36/stereo/e36_200w_stereo_pinouts.gif This information is specifically for a '95 3-series, but I have found that it works for my '97.

In addition, below is a posting from the BMW Digest. The color-codes listed in this posting are in some disagreement with the color codes shown on the above web site, so caveat emptor.

Subject: E36 stereo amp wire codes

Here are the wire pin numbers, and the wire colors, and their function, for the 2 connectors on the 10 speaker stereo amp, H-K system included, for the E36 cars. It is valid for cars made from 9/95 to the present.

>From connector X605:

  • Pin# 1 -- Power from fuse # 9 (Red/white)
  • Pin# 2 -- Antenna amplifier input (White)
  • Pin# 3 -- Ground
  • Pin# 5 -- (+) to right rear low-range speaker (Blue/violet)
  • Pin# 6 -- (-) to right rear low-range speaker (Blue/gray)
  • Pin# 7 -- (+) to left front low-range speaker (Blue/white)
  • Pin# 8 -- (-) to left front low-range speaker (Blue/brown)
  • Pin# 9 -- (+) to right front low-range speaker (Blue/red)
  • Pin# 10 -- (-) to right front low-range speaker (Blue/brown)
  • Pin# 11 -- (+) to left rear low-range speaker (Yellow/gray)
  • Pin# 12 -- (-) to left rear low-range speaker (Yellow/black)
